Posing in the UK: Top bodybuilding Events

By Rick Steele

In the UK there are many bodybuilding competitions and the calendar of events runs all year round. Competitions are either sponsored by one of the bodybuilding federations that have a presence in the UK or are privately run by other interested parties. These independent events are often run by organisations who sell products catered to body builders such as protein powder manufacturers or suppliers of other bodybuilding supplements. Events such as these are usually fairly well organised and many bodybuilders attend a mixture of independent competitions and those sponsored by recognised organisations.

The British Natural Bodybuilding Federation (BNBF) also has an increasing presence in the UK and is dedicated to 'all-natural' events. Competitors at these events are drug-tested and winners are required to pass a lie-detector test after judging. This natural trend is gaining a foot hold internationally and forces competitors to rely on diet, exercise and bodybuilding supplements such as whey protein powder in order to win events.

There are a number of organisations that run events which are tailored to differing types and levels of competitor. The NAC and the UKBFF are the UKs two main international organisations that run a number of events throughout the year and are aimed at professional entrants. The National Amateur Body Builders Association also sponsor various events regionally throughout the UK and are a good bet if you are just starting out in your bodybuilding career.

A new and recent trend in the bodybuilding world is 'all-natural' competition which enforces strict rules and carry-outs drug tests on entrants. Additionally all winners are subject to a lie-detector test after competition to ensure their adherence to these rules. This type of competition is becoming increasingly popular and many professionals feel that this adds new challenge to their practice due to the heavier focus on diet and nutrition. It is important to note that 'all-natural' does not preclude normal bodybuilding supplements such as protein and whey protein powder.

Successful competitors follow very strict regimes prior to events. If you are planning on becoming competitive, you will need to research a routine that suits you and your body. Pre-competition regimes can begin up to twelve weeks before a show; therefore it is necessary to plan well in advance. When planning your regime, it is important to remember that exercise is only a small part of your preparations.

Nutrition is an important aspect of your training and it pays to do your research well in advance and have your regime clearly set for competition. You will need to know if you are lacking in any vitamins or minerals and already be familiar with your protein requirements and whey protein powder of choice. Clearly exercise is important for any bodybuilder but pre-competition fitness is vital if you wish to perform well. Equally, you must ensure that you are getting a good balance between exercise and sleep so you can be sure both your looks and performance are at their best on competition day.
